The Teachers' Houses

The provision of suitable housing is a problem in Burkina Faso. One of the main problems is that clay - the most readily and freely available local building material - only remains temporarily aligned.

Cement building materials are becoming more and more common. They keep longer but the local population is so poor that it cannot afford them. Therefore clay remains the »material of the poor«. A lack of demand means that innovations on the clay front are non-existent since local planners can hardly afford to spend time experimenting with clay.

Generally providing accommodation for teachers in the countryside is a big problem. The teaching staff refuses to move to the countryside among other reasons because of makeshift accommodation.
