Gando Village

The village itself consists of several homesteads in which different generations live together. There are around 2 500 members of the village, of whom the majority try to earn money abroad for their families.


Burkina Faso

Gando village is situated in Burkina Faso, one of the poorest countries in West Africa. To be born here means to have little chances of education and development. Burkina Faso covers 274 200 km² (United Kingdom 244 820 km²) and has approx. 11 million inhabitants (United Kingdom approx. 60 million) of which around 50 % are under 15 years old; with around 60 tribes, of which around 50 % are Mossi. Burkina Faso has been independent since 1960. According to World Bank statistics it is one of the poorest countries in the world.
The official language is French, the most commonly spoken languages are Mòoré, Peul, and Bambara; 91 % of women and 82 % of men are illiterate. 70 % belong to African religious groups, 25 % are Muslim, and 5 % Christian. Burkina Faso Faso is in the Sahel zone and is not bordered by the sea. Two seasons characterize the country: a long dry season from November until June and a short rainy season from July until October.
