The Village's Request
It began when a request from the villagers to one of its members who was studying architecture in Germany started to become reality over coffee at the Technical University of Berlin.
Diébédo Francis Kéré, graduate of the Technical University of Berlin, comes from Gando and was requested by his village community to save their school which was threatening to collapse.
In order to collect money for the new school he convinced his fellow students to buy one or two symbolic stones for a school in his village in Africa rather than a further coffee.
With friends he ultimately founded the »Schulbausteine für Gando e.V.« association.
Its main aim has been the promotion of education, health, and development aid in Gando.
The association has been recognized as a charity (non-profit-making organization) since 1999.
